The European Journal of Cardiovascular Nursing has published new research by the HFPN identifying urgent policy actions to strengthen specialist heart failure (HF) nursing in Europe.
HF affects at least 15 million people and remains a leading cause of preventable hospitalisation. Specialist HF nurses play a critical role in improving outcomes, but their integration into care is inconsistent.
Based on a Delphi study with experts from four European countries, our research shows that not recognising HF specialist nursing in national policy is a leading barrier to their integration in care delivery.

The research also looks at ways to expand the scope of specialist nurses, which would allow them to provide care more independently.
This is an opportunity for policymakers, regulators and professional societies to strengthen HF care by investing in and enabling specialist nurses.
