On 25 October 2023, the HFPN launched the European Heart Failure Mission Statement during an event hosted by Billy Kelleher MEP at the European Parliament. The event gathered together 50 clinical experts, policymakers and patient advocates from across Europe to kick off a multi-year campaign to drive heart failure to the top of the political agenda.
The European Heart Failure Mission is a multi-year campaign that aims to engage upcoming EU Presidencies, the European Commission and the European Parliament to ensure heart failure is prioritised in EU policy. During the event, the Mission Statement and an accompanying advocacy toolkit were launched. Heart failure advocates can use these resources to highlight clear actions for the EU Commission to take.
The event provided a firm foundation for engaging EU policymakers, with strong MEP representation. Speakers highlighted the importance of investing in, and giving greater political attention to, heart failure care in Europe. Topics covered included the call for an EU Cardiovascular Health Plan, the value of early heart failure diagnosis, optimal care and multidisciplinary teams, as well as the exciting new frontiers in heart failure research. Fergal Donnelly, Principal Scientific Officer from DG Research & Innovation, provided a reaction to the European Heart Failure Mission from the Commission.
