The HFPN has published a new call to action aiming to increase awareness of the importance of specialist nurses for optimal heart failure care and drive action from the EU.

The Call to action on specialist nursing in heart failure has been endorsed by patient and professional organisations from across Europe.

As we move towards 2024 and the expected focus of Belgium’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union on the healthcare workforce crisis, the importance of heart failure specialist nurses cannot be overlooked. This call to action outlines three priority recommendations for the EU to overcome existing gaps: an analysis of the current state of the specialist workforce, the creation of a European working group on heart failure specialist nursing and the establishment of training templates and certification schemes.

Specialist nurse-led care models in heart failure can reduce hospital readmissions by 33%. The EU must take action to improve workforce capacity to ensure sustainability of European health systems.
