‘The HFPN has a proud history of advocating for policy change to improve the lives of people living with heart failure. As Programme Lead, I’m excited to carry on this work, to identify the unmet needs in heart failure care and the strategies that can be used to address them.’

What led you to work in the field of heart failure?

Some of the most fascinating and compelling projects I’ve worked on as a health policy researcher have focused on cardiovascular health. Since I became involved in the HFPN, I’ve enjoyed contributing to a number of outputs. Heart failure is such an important condition to address with meaningful action in policy and practice, so I’m really excited by the opportunity to lead the HFPN.

What does an average day look like for you?

One of the great things about leading the HFPN is that the role is so varied. I’m involved in all the network’s activities developing written statements and reports, organising events and engaging with policymakers. Behind the scenes, I work with the team to develop proposals for new activities – and of course I keep in touch with our wonderful partners and collaborators.

In the field of heart failure, what’s working well and what could be improved?

There have been so many successful and innovative programmes for earlier detection and best-practice management of heart failure, and outcomes are slowly improving. However, there are still many gaps and inconsistencies in the delivery of heart failure care, and it remains the leading cause of avoidable hospitalisations in Europe.

What changes would you like to see in heart failure?

I would like to see consistent implementation of best-practice services in prevention and care. It will look different in different parts of the world, but it will always require political commitment to address heart failure as part of a wider cardiovascular health plan.

Outside of work, what do you enjoy doing?

I spend most of my free time with my husband and two young boys. We are fortunate to have some great country parks nearby, where we can visit some animals, take a train ride or just run around. Other favourite weekend outings include visiting interactive museums and going swimming.

The Heart Failure Policy Network brings together experts who are united in their passion: to improve outcomes for people living with heart failure.
