Dr Yvan Devaux is Group Leader of the Cardiovascular Research Unit at Luxembourg Institute of Health. With a background in Biological Sciences, Dr Devaux’s main research interest is the discovery and validation of novel RNA biomarkers and therapeutic targets of multiple diseases, including cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases. Recognising that addressing complex diseases requires a systemic approach, his goal is to tackle brain–heart interactions, considering that ‘A good brain a good heart are always a formidable combination’ (Nelson Mandela, 1976). He believes that multidisciplinary, collaborative work is key to successful research. One of his professional goals is to bring together complementary expertise from clinicians, basic researchers, statisticians, bioinformaticians, systems biologists, data specialists and industry partners to resolve unmet medical needs. He also aspires to take part in the supervision and training of the next generation of scientists, saying: ‘Training students today creates the leaders of tomorrow’s research.’
